Hannah Montana’s real name is Miley Cyrus. She is the star of her own show on the Disney channel and she is a known artist in the Pop music community. Brutus the Buckeye is the mascot of The Ohio State University. He is most known by football fans, but he represents all sports and activities at the college. Oprah Winfrey is my last icon. Oprah is best known now for her talk show, but has also acted in and produced shows.
I chose these icons because I feel they are a good representation of multiple generations. Hannah Montana is the symbol of the pre teen and teen generation. She is known by almost every child in the United States as well as in other countries. She is one of the biggest role models at this time. I chose Brutus because he is an icon for the college age people. He is not just known in Columbus, but again, known all over the U.S. He is the symbol of the University. Oprah Winfrey is an icon of the older generation. She is a role model for how women should conduct themselves; strong, caring and involved with her community.
Hannah Montana, to me, is every teenager in the States. She has crushes on boys, problems at school, and she fights with her parents. However, she is strong, level headed and to me, worthy of being an American Icon. Brutus the Buckeye is an example of how OSU students should be. When I think of Brutus I think of a student who attends all of his classes with an interested demeanor, attends a multitude of athletic events and is involved in the Columbus community. He is a good role model for OSU students. To me Oprah Winfrey is an amazing American Icon. She is open-minded to different people and compassionate to all walks of life.

Amanda, I really enjoyed your chosen Icons. While reading your post I thought about how we (people) speak about icons, celebrities, or other people who we do not actually know. The information the public receives about most of the human icons comes from media, news, books, or some other outlet for information, but is it trustworthy to believe that anyone can actually know how someone is based on how they seem through third party information outlets?
ReplyDeleteDuring your post you spoke so highly about the people you wrote about, but I had negative thoughts about them. Brutus the Buckeye may me think about a guy I know who was the mascot at OSU, but was not a good role model in the context that you had perceived him. I have heard a great deal of negative things about Opera a few years back, which has not surfaced for a while, but she could have gotten a better publicity agent! Any way, I am sure you understand what I am saying. What do you think?

I agree with what you are saying. With regards to brutus, I think he is more of a figure rather than an actual person. The people under his mask may not be the best role models and do the best things. It is more the idea of what he should be that makes me think of him as an icon. Now Oprah, I will admit that I don't know as much about her as I should, but I think everyone has made mistakes and she in no ay is perfect, but in her life she has overcame a lot and made herself into a well known celebrity known for more good than bad.
